Ensuring your home is secure starts with the basics: lock all your doors and windows. It might sound overly simplistic, but many invaders scout neighbourhoods, searching for that one unlocked entry point. Their first move is to check for easy access—windows left ajar, doors not properly secured, or spare keys hidden outside.

Take a moment to evaluate your home’s security. How easy is it for someone to enter without breaking anything? By understanding potential vulnerabilities, you can better protect your home from becoming a target.

Here are a few practical steps you can take to enhance your home security and keep unwanted visitors at bay.

House Alarm System

House alarm systems are both loud and effective because intruders want to avoid drawing any attention to themselves.

Make sure your alarm system box is prominently displayed at the front of your house, serving as a clear warning to potential intruders. A home with a visible alarm system is far less appealing than an easy, unprotected target. Besides providing extra security, installing a house alarm system can also help lower your home insurance costs.

Door Security

Doors are the main entry points to your home, so having secure locks is crucial to prevent intruders from breaking in.

Ensure your door has strong, solid frames and is fitted with a chain or latch for added security. Avoid doors with glass windows, as they can be easily broken and offer less security. Never leave keys in the back of the door, especially if there is a letterbox nearby—intruders are clever and often come equipped with tools. Some locks are easier to break, so seek expert advice to choose the most secure and up-to-date door locks.

Window Security

Any windows at ground level or those that are easily accessible should be double-glazed glass, as this is less easy to break. It is obvious to make sure all windows are locked; however, upgrade your locks to ones that secure the entire frame rather than just the handle to the frame. Lastly, check your window's condition for rust or rotten frames.

CCTV

CCTV or security cameras placed around the home internally and externally are extremely effective. Not only will they discourage invaders from attempting to enter, but you will also have physical evidence if anything does happen to your home. With security cameras, you have access 24/7 via your phone. Anyone who enters the premises will be able to view it instantly wherever you are.

Hide your valuables

Invaders and burglars always have a target for something to steal; hiding all valuable items and presenting your home as invaluable will deter burglars from your home. If your home is presented as a wealthy property with expensive items visible through windows, you are giving them something they want to steal. Don’t let them choose your home as a valuable target.

You're on Holiday

When your home is empty for some time, for instance, if you're on holiday, you do not want it to look vacant. Empty homes are the perfect subject target for burglars as the most significant potential complication has been removed. Cancel any potential deliveries to the home so they do not pile up outside; this is a clear sign of whether somebody is present at the property. Consider asking a family member or friend to house-sit for the time you are gone or check in on your home regularly. This decreases the sense of your absence from the property.
